HAP Expands Provider Network to Serve More Members in Northern and Mid-Michigan

big news

Health Alliance Plan (HAP), a Michigan-based nonprofit health plan, announced this month the successful expansion of its provider network across Michigan through new agreements with Wexford Physician Hospital Organization (PHO), Sparrow Health System and Eaton Rapids Medical Center. These contracts have enhanced health care service accessibility for HAP members in previously underserved areas of northwestern and Mid-Michigan.

“Our expanded partnerships with Wexford PHO, Sparrow Health System and Eaton Rapids Medical Center reflect HAP’s commitment to enhancing health care access and closing coverage gaps for members across Michigan,” said Margaret Anderson, interim President of HAP. “These new agreements mark a significant step in strengthening our statewide network and positioning us for future growth in other regions.”

Wexford PHO

Effective Jan. 1, 2025, Wexford PHO, including Munson Health Care and Munson Medical Center, joined HAP’s provider network. The addition applies to existing members with:

  • Commercial employer group HMO, EPO and PPO plans
  • Individual plans
  • Self-funded plans managed by ASR
  • Medicare Advantage HMO and PPO plans

The expansion added eight hospitals, more than 700 physicians, and ancillary services (diagnostic and support services such as imaging and different types of therapies) to the HAP network. Wexford PHO is located in Cadillac, while Traverse City-based Munson Health care covers 29 counties in Northern Michigan.

Sparrow Health System

Effective Jan. 1, 2025, Sparrow Health System joined HAP’s commercial employer group HMO network. This partnership added six hospitals in Lansing, Charlotte, St. Johns, Ionia and Carson City, as well as more than 500 physicians and ancillary services, expanding HAP’s HMO network to Lansing and the surrounding areas.

Eaton Rapids Medical Center

Effective Jan. 1, 2025, Eaton Rapids Medical Center, a critical access hospital for rural communities in Mid-Michigan, became in-network for existing members with the following plans:

  • Commercial employer group HMO, EPO and PPO plans
  • Individual plans
  • Self-funded plans managed by ASR
  • Medicare Advantage HMO and PPO plans

The network expansion of Eaton Rapids Medical Center adds one hospital, 170+ physicians and ancillary services to the HAP, HMO and PPO networks.

These three new provider groups join one of the largest health plan networks in the Lower Peninsula, encompassing over 50,000 providers and 96% providers in the state. HAP members can explore participating providers in these newly added networks by visiting hap.org/find-a-doctor.
