Over-the-counter benefit

Many HAP Medicare Advantage plans include an over-the-counter benefit, also known as OTC. This benefit lets you purchase over-the-counter items you may need using an allowance.

Using your quarterly over-the-counter benefit

You get a stipend on hundreds of OTC items from our online product catalog. The allowance amount is based on your plan.

You can use this benefit to purchase items such as:

  • Allergy, cold, flu and sinus medications
  • Antacids and acid reducers
  • Pain relievers and fever reducers
  • Healthy food and produce (Eligible Members)
  • Dental and denture care
  • Personal care
  • Diabetes supplies
  • First aid and medical supplies
  • Vitamins and minerals 

Visit our Important forms and documents section and click “Summary of Benefits” to find the SOB for your plan. Your specific dollar amount can be found under the “Additional Covered Benefits” section of the Summary of Benefits or further down on this page.

How to order OTC items

Ordering is quick, easy and convenient. We offer tho ways for our members to order over-the-counter products: online or by phone. No matter which way you order, your items will be shipped directly to your door. You can also use retail stores such as Meijer, Family Dollar, CVS, Walgreens, Walmart and other participating stores near you. 

Order online 

Shop our online product catalog 24/7. You'll need to register and create an account if it's your first visit to the store. You'll need to register to use the store. Have your member ID card handy as you'll need it during the process.   

Order by phone 

Speak with an OTC advocate between 8am - 8pm, 7 days a week, 365 days a year by calling (877) 484-7977 (TTY: 711). Our advocates can help answer any question you might have and assist you with placing your order. 

Common questions about the over-the-counter benefit

I’ve called and tried to order items, but they seem to be on backorder – is there another way to order?

You can also shop from a retail store such as Meijer, Family Dollar, CVS, Walgreens, Walmart and other participating stores near you.

How long will it take to get my order?

We are pleased to offer 2 day shipping on most items.

Can I pay for extra items if I use my full dollar amount? 

If you would like to order items that are above your benefit amount you may use a credit card on the online catalogs. You may order as frequently as you like.

Can I purchase items for family members and friends?

No. OTC products are intended for member use only to help with a health or medical need. Your card may be declined if you try to use it at an unapproved location or for unapproved items. 

Do you accept returns?

No. Due to the personal nature of these products, returns are not accepted.

HAP Medicare Complete Duals (HMO D-SNP) and HAP Medicare Complete Assist (PPO D-SNP) are Medicare health plans with Medicare contracts and a contract with the Michigan Medicaid Program. Enrollment depends on contract renewals.
