Over-the-counter and prepaid benefits Mastercard®
HAP Medicare Advantage members are now offered a prepaid card, otherwise known as a flex card, to use toward over-the-counter items and health-related needs. Any unused balance on your card will roll over to the next month or quarter, depending on your plan. All card balances must be used by the end of the calendar year as they expire on December 31, 2025.
How to use your flexible benefits Mastercard® prepaid card
Your flexible benefits Mastercard® prepaid card helps you buy health-related items and services. It’s easy to use. Follow these simple steps to get started.
Activate your card
Before using your card, make sure it’s activated. You can do this in two simple ways:
- By phone

Visit: HAP.NationsBenefits.com/Activate
Once activated, you are ready to start using your card to purchase eligible items and services.
Your card funds will be loaded on your effective date (the first day your insurance is active).
If you didn’t receive your prepaid benefits Mastercard®, call (877) 484-7977 (TTY:711).
What can you use your card for?
Your flexible benefits Mastercard® prepaid card can be used to purchase a wide range of health-related items and services, helping you personalize your care. This includes:
- Over-the-counter items: brand name and generic over-the-counter products including but not limited to cold medicine, first-aid supplies, pain relievers, sleep aids and vitamins.
- Health services: Depending on your benefit plan, you may also be able to use your card to pay for certain health services including co-pay assistance*, home modifications* and healthy food items**. Check your evidence of coverage for an exact list of what your plan covers.
To ensure you’re using your benefits in the right way, you can shop for eligible products and services through the following options:
- In-store at participating retail locations
- Online through the Nations Benefits Pro Portal at HAP.NationsBenefits.com
- Over the phone with the help of a Member Experience Advisor
Ineligible items such as alcohol, tobacco, lottery tickets and more will not be approved for purchase using your card.

How to check your card balance
It's important to keep track of your available balance to ensure you’re within your spending limits. It’s also important to know that your card balance will roll over to the following month or quarter if the funds are not used.
You can check your card balance in the following ways:
- Online: Visit the Benefits Pro Portal at HAP.NationsBenefits.com to view your balance.
- Phone: Call (877) 484-7977 (TTY: 711) for assistance.
What should you do if your card is lost or stolen?
If your card is lost or stolen, it’s important to report it as soon as possible. You should call NationsBenefits at (877) 484-7977 (TTY: 711) immediately to report the issue. A replacement card will be sent to you within 10 business days.
Managing a chronic condition and using your card for healthy food
We are pleased to offer healthy food and produce to members who have one or more chronic conditions:
- Chronic heart failure
- Chronic lung disorders
- Chronic and disabling mental health conditions
- Chronic alcohol and other drug dependence
- Autoimmune disorders
- Cancer
- Cardiovascular disorders
- Dementia
- Diabetes
- End-stage liver disease
- End-stage renal disease (ESRD)
- Severe hematologic disorders
- HIV/AIDS
- Neurologic disorders
- Stroke
Eligible healthy food items, including but not limited to:
- Fresh fruits and vegetables
- Pantry staples and healthy grains
- Meats and seafood
If you have one of the above conditions, please call the customer service number on the back of your HAP ID card and they will assist you in using your card for healthy food items.
HAP Medicare Complete HMO and PPO D-SNP members
Your card will be loaded on your effective date (the first day your insurance is active). You do not need to track expenses or turn in receipts.
You can use the funds to purchase:
Brand name and generic over-the-counter (OTC) products, including but not limited to:
- Cold medicine • Personal Care
- First-aid supplies • Sleep Aids
- Pain relievers • Vitamins & Dietary Supplements
Shop at a participating retail location or visit HAP.NationsBenefits.com to place an order through the Benefits Pro™ Portal.
Eligible healthy food items, including but not limited to:
- Fresh fruits and vegetables
- Pantry staples and healthy grains
- Meats and seafood
Eligible home modifications*, including but not limited to:
- Seats, stools, and benches for showering
- Removable and/or adjustable shower heads
- Stair lifts, widened doorways, and/or ramp installations
Eligible utilities items*, including but not limited to:
- Water, heating and cooling
- Electricity/gas (in addition to heating/cooling, this covers lighting and general electrical needs)
- Trash/recycling, landline phone, internet and cable
Eligible pest control items*, including but not limited to:
- Pest control equipment, backpack sprayers, pest control spray hoses, bed bug steamers and pest control granulators
- Pumps and surgebusters
- Weed and landscape equipment
Fuel at the pump*
- Fuel for your vehicle
Copay assistiance
- Eligible copay expenses (reference your plan documents for additional information)

* Because we participate in the Value Based Insurance Design (VBID) Model, members who are eligible for “Extra Help” may use the Flex Card benefit towards healthy food and produce, home modifications, pest control, utilities and fuel at the pump or ride share services.
** This benefit is a Special Supplemental Benefit for the Chronically III (SSBCI) and is made available to members with one or more qualifying chronic conditions. Not all members will qualify for this benefit. Qualifying chronic condition include, but are not limited to, diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, chronic lung disorders, cancer and dementia.
