Strategic partnerships and execution on key initiatives propel member-focused growth
TROY, Mich. (March 27, 2025) – Health Alliance Plan (HAP), a Michigan-based, wholly owned nonprofit health plan of Henry Ford Health, announced its 2024 financial performance today. The audited results showed net income of $32.4 million, including operating income of $6.7 million. That marks a turnaround from 2023, when the company reported a net loss of $17.9 million and an operating loss of $46.8 million. The organization credits the improvement to a disciplined focus on people, process and an enterprise growth model launched in June 2023 — one that not only stabilized the organization but also positioned it for long-term success.
HAP launched a series of data-informed initiatives that improved visibility, performance drivers, and increased foundational capabilities to engineer its turnaround. Interim President Margaret Anderson attributed the success to the organization’s dedication to member needs and effective cross-functional collaboration.
“Our financial achievements in 2024 reflect our mission to deliver high-quality coverage, foster strategic enterprise alliances and drive innovation that advances health outcomes for our beneficiaries,” Anderson said. “With a strong financial foundation and a long-range approach to growth and resilience, we are well-positioned to meet the evolving needs of the Michigan communities we serve.”
Key results include:
- Net income: HAP achieved net income of $32.4 million in 2024, reversing a $17.9 million loss in 2023 for a net improvement of $50.3 million year over year.
- Operating income: HAP achieved operating income of $6.7 million in 2024, reversing a $46.8 million loss in 2023 for a net improvement of $53.6 million in 2024.
- Membership growth: Expanded 20 percent, adding 76,000 members between September 2024 and February 2025.
“These results reflect the strength of the financial and operational measures we've put in place to stabilize and strengthen the organization,” said Merrill Hausenfluck, senior vice president and CFO of HAP. “We will continue to build on this momentum by enhancing efficiencies, deepening high-impact collaborations and delivering greater value to our members.”
HAP leveraged its joint initiatives, particularly with its provider sponsor, Henry Ford Health, to drive affordability and improve patient care. HAP CareSource, a joint venture with CareSource, an Ohio-based multistate managed care organization, increased membership through a successful Medicaid expansion and a reentry into the health insurance marketplace. Looking ahead, the insurance provider plans to continue its investments in technology, using advanced analytics to support a proactive, intelligence-led approach. HAP is well-positioned to improve outcomes and meet evolving quality standards — all while ensuring that health care remains accessible and affordable across its Medicare, Commercial and Medicaid lines.
